How to use the Keyword Density Checker
- Paste your article, product description or page copy into the box.
- Add the keyword or phrase you are targeting, if you have one.
- Read the density and the tables of top words and phrases. Trim repeats that sound forced.
How keyword density is calculated
Keyword density = (times the keyword appears × words in the keyword) ÷ total words × 100. A 500-word page that uses a two-word phrase 5 times has a density of 2%.
What to do with the result
- Under about 0.3%: the phrase may be missing from important places. Check the title, the first paragraph and at least one heading.
- Between 0.5% and 2%: a natural range for most pages.
- Above about 3%: the text probably sounds repetitive. Swap some repeats for synonyms and related phrases.
Search engines understand related words, so a page about a furnace can say heater, heating system or HVAC and still match. Write for the reader first.
Why the phrase tables matter
The tables show your most repeated single words, two-word phrases and three-word phrases. If a phrase you did not plan to repeat is at the top, you may be leaning on it too much. If your target phrase is missing from the list, it may not be prominent enough.

Frequently asked questions
What is keyword density?
Keyword density is how often a keyword appears compared with the total number of words, shown as a percentage. If a phrase appears 5 times in 500 words, its density is 1%.
What is a good keyword density for SEO?
There is no official perfect number. Many writers keep an exact phrase under about 2 to 3 percent and use natural variations instead of repeating it.
Can too many keywords hurt my rankings?
Yes. Repeating a phrase in a forced way is called keyword stuffing. It reads badly and can make a page look low quality to both readers and search engines.
How is density calculated for a phrase of several words?
This tool multiplies the number of times the phrase appears by its word count, divides by the total words and shows the result as a percentage.
