To cancel Amazon Prime, go to Your Account, then Prime Membership, select Manage membership, then End membership, and follow the prompts until you see a confirmation. It takes about 5 minutes. If you have not used any Prime benefits since your last charge, you can usually get a full refund.

Amazon shows a few screens asking you to stay. Keep tapping the button to continue canceling until you see a message that your membership has ended or will end.

Amazon Prime cost in 2026

Before you cancel, it helps to know what you pay:

Plan Price
Monthly $14.99 a month
Yearly $139 a year
Prime for students Lower price for eligible students
Prime Access (for people on qualifying government aid) $6.99 a month

If you pay monthly and only use Prime a few times a year, canceling and rejoining when you need it can save money.

How to cancel Amazon Prime on the website

  1. Go to amazon.com and sign in.
  2. Hover over Account & Lists and select Prime Membership, or search for "Prime membership" in the help pages.
  3. Select Manage membership (it may say Update, cancel and more).
  4. Select End membership.
  5. Amazon will show what you lose and may offer a lower price or a reminder. Select Continue to cancel on each page.
  6. Choose when your membership should end, if asked.
  7. Look for the final confirmation message. You should also get an email.

How to cancel Amazon Prime on the app

  1. Open the Amazon Shopping app.
  2. Tap the person icon at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Tap Your Account, then find Manage Prime membership (you may need to scroll or use the search bar).
  4. Tap Manage membership, then End membership.
  5. Tap Continue to cancel on each page until you see a confirmation.

If you signed up for Prime through Apple, Google Play, or another company (like a phone carrier), you may need to cancel through that company instead. Your Prime membership page will tell you how you are being billed.

Will you get a refund?

Amazon's rules are simple once you know them:

Your situation Refund you can expect
You have not used any Prime benefits since your last charge Usually a full refund
You used some benefits, and you pay yearly Often a partial refund for the unused time
You used benefits, and you pay monthly Usually no refund, but you keep Prime until the month ends
You are on a free trial No charge, so no refund needed

Amazon says it will show you the refund amount, if any, before you confirm. Refunds usually go back to your payment method within a few business days.

What counts as using a benefit? Things like free Prime shipping on an order, watching Prime Video, listening to Amazon Music, or using Prime deals. If you are not sure, check the refund amount Amazon shows during cancellation.

End now or at the end of the billing period?

Amazon may let you choose:

  • End now: Your benefits stop right away. This is the choice that may come with a refund.
  • End on your renewal date: You keep Prime until the time you paid for runs out, then it stops. No more charges.

If you just paid for a full year and have not used it, ending now is usually the better choice. If you are partway through a month you already paid for, ending on the renewal date lets you use what you paid for.

Cancel a free trial before you get charged

Prime free trials turn into paid memberships unless you cancel. Use the same steps above. You can cancel on the first day and still use Prime until the trial ends.

Tip: Set a phone reminder 2 days before the trial ends, just in case.

What you lose when Prime ends

  • Free fast shipping on Prime items
  • Prime Video, Amazon Music Prime, and Prime Reading
  • Prime-only deals and early access to sales events
  • Photo storage perks with Amazon Photos
  • Prime discounts on some groceries and services

What you keep: Your Amazon account, order history, saved addresses, gift card balance, digital books and movies you bought, and Subscribe and Save orders. You can still shop on Amazon. Orders under the free shipping minimum will have a shipping fee.

The FTC Prime settlement

In September 2025, Amazon agreed to pay $2.5 billion to settle claims by the Federal Trade Commission that it signed people up for Prime without clear consent and made canceling hard. As part of the deal, Amazon agreed to make it easier to cancel and to show clearer information when people sign up.

Some members could claim a refund of up to $51, but the deadline to file a claim was July 27, 2026, and it has now passed. If you already filed, watch your email for updates. In September 2026, the FTC announced more payments to people in the settlement, so check the FTC's Amazon refunds page for the latest news. Be careful with emails or texts that ask for a fee to get a refund, since the real program never charges one.

Canceling Prime does not always cancel add-ons. Check these on your Memberships and Subscriptions page:

  • Prime Video channels, like Max, Paramount+, or Starz
  • Amazon Music Unlimited
  • Kindle Unlimited
  • Audible
  • The Prime Video ad-free add-on

Each one may keep charging you until you cancel it separately.

Problems canceling?

  • You do not see End membership. You may be billed through Apple, Google, or another partner. Cancel there.
  • You were charged after canceling. Check the date you canceled in your confirmation email. Then contact Amazon customer service.
  • You have more than one Amazon account. Make sure you are signed in to the account that is paying for Prime.
  • Someone else in your Amazon Household pays. Only the main account holder can cancel.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a refund if I cancel Amazon Prime?

If you have not used any Prime benefits since your last charge, Amazon usually gives a full refund. If you used some benefits, annual members may get a partial refund for the unused time. Amazon shows your refund amount before you confirm.

Do I lose Prime right away when I cancel?

Not always. Amazon usually lets you choose to end your membership now, which may come with a refund, or keep your benefits until the end of the period you already paid for.

How do I cancel a Prime free trial?

Go to Your Prime Membership, select Manage membership, then End membership. You keep the trial benefits until the trial ends, and you will not be charged.

Can I pause Amazon Prime instead of canceling?

Amazon sometimes offers a pause option for some members. If you see it in the cancel steps, pausing stops charges for a while without losing your account settings. Not every member sees this option.

Does canceling Prime delete my Amazon account?

No. Your Amazon account, order history, and saved addresses stay the same. You just lose Prime perks like free fast shipping and Prime Video.
